Start with the asset and its job
Distinguish an email sequence from a landing page, ad concepts or a full message strategy. List the inputs needed for that asset: customer evidence, offer details, brand voice and design constraints. If the client cannot supply them, scope discovery explicitly.
Choose a process that allows clarification
Compare a packaged service with a proposal-based engagement. A repeatable editing task may fit a package; an unclear offer usually needs a conversation. Evaluate the Fiverr and Upwork models against your own brief rather than promising a platform with better clients.

Show the reasoning behind your copy
Present the audience problem, message hierarchy and alternatives you considered. Include results only when you can explain the measurement and your contribution. A clear before-and-after edit can demonstrate skill without an unsupported sales claim.
Agree on testing and responsibility
State whether implementation, analytics and experimentation are included. Delivery of copy and proof of a business outcome are separate milestones. Name the approver, revision limits and what changes if the offer changes. This keeps the project reviewable for both sides.
Common questions
Is copywriting the same as writing articles?
The deliverable, reader action and research can differ. Describe the service precisely so the client can compare like-for-like offers.
Should I guarantee conversions?
Do not promise an outcome you cannot control or substantiate. Agree on deliverables and any testing responsibilities instead.
